PRESS RELEASE_11
Darfur Rebels Recognise Israel
The leader of the rebel Sudan Liberation Movement (which started life as Darfur Liberation Movement before mysteriously and inexplicably changing its name) is Mr. Abdul Wahid Al Nur.  He is well known as “Mr. No”.  His record of refusal is phenomenal.  He refused to sign the Abuja Peace Agreement in 06.  He refused to attend peace negotiations in Sirte (Libya) in October last year.  He refused to attend rebel unification meetings in Arusha – Tanzania in August 07.  He even refused to fly to Yei to meet the first Vice –President Salva Kiir who wanted to mediate!
The list of those whom he snubbed (from his Paris residence where he holds court) is impressive.  It includes top UN emissaries, African Union and EU representatives, ministers, prime ministers and dignitaries.  What is the secret of his strength? Support of his people in Kalma camp? Maybe;
The full answer came last week when he declared with pride that his Movement has opened an office in Tel Aviv, Israel.  The trump card up his sleeve, is at last out!  He took the opportunity to pontificate about the desirability of peace between Israel and the Arabs!
This declaration is proof of what Sudan has maintained since 2003 that the crisis of Darfur is inseparable from the wider Middle East conflict and that the rebels have foreign sponsors.  It also shows that some writers, academics and NGO’s who resisted the signing of Abuja Peace Agreement and did their level best to sabotage it could also be linked to Middle Eastern players.
Mr. Abdul Wahid’s declaration was made at a time in which the right-wing Israeli establishment is intensifying its aggression against the caged and humiliated Palestinians , ostensibly in response to home-made rockets; but actually punishing them for resisting the occupation and daring to elect a party which is not favoured by Israel.  The aim – as the British-Jewish academic  Avi Shlaim put it is “to starve the people of Gaza into submission.”
Peace between Israel and its neighbours is feasible.  Indeed the Arab Peace initiative (fully endorsed by Sudan) is based on the “land for peace formula”.  Withdrawal to the 1967 border, the establishment of a contiguous Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital and reaching a settlement for the refugees.  All based on UN Resolutions 242, 338 and 194.
That initiative has sadly not been accepted, mainly because it entails certain steps which mean ending the occupation, dismantling what Archbishop Desmond Tutu called “Apartheid in the Holy Land”: Stopping house demolitions, assassinations, collective punishment, settlements, the land grabbing-wall, the “reserved” roads for Israelis only – none of which is mentioned by Abdul Wahid Nur.
The people of Darfur can never be separated from solidarity with the Palestinians: Zahir Suror Al Sadati and his volunteers supported the Palestinians in 1948 and were proud of their record.  By contrast Abdul Wahid Al Nur’s desperate gamble means political suicide of a blinkered rebel.  The tragedy of Darfur (which we do not deny) will be resolved by all Sudanese, with the help of the International community and peace-loving people – including peace-loving Jews and Israelis.  That will be achieved in Darfur (not in Paris or Tel Aviv) by those whose loyalty is to the Sudan and whose Agenda is Sudanese.
The poet Abut Tayeb  Al Mutanabbi has described a situation similar to that of Abdul Wahid who does not fully understand the implications of his actions: He who enlists the hungry lion as his hunting assistant Will end up being devoured by the lion.
