PRESS RELEASE (25)
Ocampo’s Road to Justice
There is no covertness in the targeting of Sudan and its leaders by L. Ocampo and his International Criminal Court’s statements which culminated in the infamous 14th of July accusations.
Sudan – which is ruled by a National Unity Government, based on an interim constitution is now targeted as a direct result of the failure of the rebel attack on Omdurman (10 May 08). The rebels need a boost to their morale. Ocampo and those who pull his strings oblige. Ignorance of the significance of timing - if claimed – will mean schoolboy naivety or political illiteracy.
• Sudan, which has a road-map leading to general elections next year, has managed under the leadership of President Bashir to put an end to more than twenty years of civil war (1983-2005). Instead of Peace Prizes, the reward is sanctions and false accusations in an unjust World Order.
• When faced with terror attacks, western countries have famously “changed the rules” of government and liberties. Facing terror and armed aggression; Sudan is expected to send those who maim and kill bouquets of flowers! Mr. L. Ocampo and those who pull his strings apply double standards when they turn a blind eye to horrendous crimes against humanity by others who are too powerful to intimidate or bully!
• Sudan is targeted because it has adopted a progressive Elections’ Law this month which guarantees women more than 25% of the seats of Parliament and makes it possible for minority parties to be represented thanks to a proportional representation formula.
• Sudan is targeted because – according to IMF documents it has one of the fastest growing economies in Africa, 10% in 07.
• Sudan is targeted because it has 29 independent newspapers, tens of political parties and several independent Radio and Television stations.
• Sudan’s leaders are targeted through the Darfur crisis despite the fact that during President Bashir’s leadership, three universities were established in Darfur. Hundreds of schools were built. All three governors of the Darfur state are from Darfur, so is the speaker of the Upper Chamber and many federal ministers. Wells and hospitals were destroyed by the rebels since 03.
• There is a crisis in Darfur; but the government has signed the 06 Darfur Peace Agreement (which most of the rebels have rejected), has declared a cease-fire, has gone to Sirte in Libya (October 07) (the rebels stayed away) and has even helped the efforts to unify the rebels in order to have a partner for peace. It has arrested, tried and even hanged some of the perpetrators of violence.
• The most urgent task is the revitalisation of the peace process. What Mr. L. Ocampo does is likely to lead to the opposite. His actions are the designs of someone who takes the crisis out of context. Prolonging the suffering of the people of Darfur has nothing to do with justice. Emboldening the obdurate war lords has nothing to do with justice. Endangering the Comprehensive Peace Agreement 05 (the bed-rock of peace and stability which was brokered by the international community led by the USA and the UK) has nothing to do with justice.
Politics, wearing the mask of the Law is the root motive of Mr. Ocampo’s frenzy. Ocampo’s “Road to Justice is paved with bad intentions!”
