unsec.jpgWali (Governor) of North Darfur State, Osman Mohamed Yousif Kibir, highlighted the great achievements brought about by Abuja Peace Agreement, top of which is the stability of situations in Darfur region. This came during his briefing Wednesday to the Secretary General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon, during his meeting with the Government of North Darfur State. Kibir attributed the tangible improvement in the humanitarian situations to the efforts exerted by the Government at the federal and state levels in collaborations with the International organizations working in the Sudan.

In this regard, Kibir referred to the voluntary return convoys of the internally displaced persons from the camps to their home villages and areas, as a direct result to the improvement of situations in Darfur. The Governor further welcomed the Resolution No. 1769 issued by the Security Council, affirming commitment of his Government to implement it completely with all due transparency. As for the IDPs inside the camps, the Governor affirmed that there are no cases of malnutrition or epidemics among them. The Governor further revealed that some 89,000 of the IDPs have returned to their home areas in the previous weeks, saying that this necessitates cooperation of all parties to make the voluntary return programme success. Unfortunately, some organizations do not encourage them to return to their home areas, said the Governor, calling on the UN Secretary General to extend the necessary assistance for them. As for the coming talks between the Government and the non-signatories of Abuja peace agreement, the Governor underlined the importance of embarking on talks with these movements towards the lasting peace and stability in Darfur. We are looking forward for your support as friends to the people of Darfur in the dialogue. We want the UN to be part of the solution of the issue of Darfur, said the Governor. The Governor expressed readiness of North Darfur State to receive the hybrid operation in a similar way as it has received the missions of the African Union and the United Nations as well as the NGOs to reach the aspired goal of stability and peace in Darfur.
